Education of IT teachers for new schools in Ethiopia

Project objectives:
Karlheinz Böhm and his aid organisation Menschen für Menschen (People for People) have built numerous schools, grammar schools, middle schools and high schools. While there have been sufficient teachers for the finished grammar and middle schools, so that school operation could begin immediately, there is an urgent need for the training of teachers as IT trainers. This is where the Austrian model of our HTLs (higher technical schools), with an emphasis on „Information Technology“ was applied.

Project implementation:
In cooperation with bit media, a project has been set up for the training of teachers, as well as the organisational establishment of local IT-schools. This type of project includes consultation, needs analysis, curriculum planning, preparation of learning materials (books, computers, CD ROMs, etc.), comprehensive teacher training, both technically and didactically and coaching for teachers.
A new computer network has been set up in the school and local administrators were trained to manage the IT network.

Project Results:
20 teachers were qualified in ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence). A concept for the establishment of an IT training program was developed and a curriculum was developed accordingly.
